Glossary of Terms:
California Solar Initiative - As part of Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger's Million Solar Roofs Program, California has set a goal
to create 3,000 megawatts of new, solar-produced electricity by 2017 —
moving the state toward a cleaner energy future and helping lower the
cost of solar systems for consumers. This is a comprehensive $2.8 billion
program. The CSI offers cash incentives on solar PV systems of up to $2.50
a watt. These incentives, combined with federal tax incentives, can cover
up to 50% of the total cost of a solar panel system.
Feed In Tariff - is an incentive structure to encourage
the adoption of renewable energy through government legislation. The regional
or national electricity utilities are obligated to buy renewable electricity
(electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar photovoltaics,
wind power, biomass, and geothermal power) at above market rates set by
the government
Grid Parity - Grid parity, the point at which photovoltaic
electricity is equal to or cheaper than grid power, is achieved first
in areas with abundant sun and high costs for electricity such as in California
and Japan.
Net Metering - Under net metering, a system owner receives retail credit for at least a portion of the electricity they generate. The ideal has the customers existing electricity meter spinning backwards, effectively banking excess electricity production for future credit.
Renewable Energy Credit (REC) - Tradable environmental commodities in the United States which represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource.
